Mark Barber

Credentials: Mark attended the University of Texas at Austin and Austin Community College and has been has been practicing Physical and Massage Therapy since 1984. His first 11 years of practice were at St. David’s Hospital, and he has been in private practice since 1995. Mark has studied Aston-Patterning® with it’s developer Judith Aston since 1992 and is Certified through the advanced level and as a faculty member has been teaching for the Aston Training Center since 2006. Specialty: Mark owns New Dimensions Healing Arts in Austin, Texas. He works primarily with acute and chronic pain and also enjoys working with clients interested in experiencing more ease in their bodies throughout their daily and recreational activities. Mark’s therapeutic approach is eclectic with Aston- Patterning® at the heart of his sessions, with Craniosacral Therapy®, Myofascial Release®, Visceral Manipulation and the many other disciplines he has studied since 1985 incorporated to achieve the best possible outcome for his clients. Personal Statement: I began my career in Physical Therapy after having recovering from being a quadriplegic which resulted from having had Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Though my muscle function returned I was left very weak. After I began working in the hospital for about 1 year, I developed chronic back and neck pain for which traditional Physical Therapy alone was not very helpful. This lead me into a personal exploration to find alternative approaches that could not only help me, but also help the patients I was drawn to work with that were also dealing with chronic pain. Thankfully, I returned to living a pain free life and became much stronger than I had ever been before my illness. Now it gives me great pleasure to help others as I had been helped. I have been a “Wounded Healer” which gives me true insight in to what my clients are going through and compassion that comes from having been there myself.

Sarah Irwin

From my first memory I loved dancing, horses and swimming.
In high school I was on the swim team and spent my out of school hours in dance rehearsals and riding my horse.

After graduating from college as a dance major, I performed with various dance companies and eventually formed my own dance company.

I supplemented my dance life by teaching aerobics, yoga, dance and in the 80’s started teaching Pilates at the Houston Ballet.

Fast forward to 2000, I was on faculty at Michael King’s Pilates Institute of London touring Europe, the UK and Moscow to train other teachers.
At this time, I was gifted an Aston Patterning® session and experienced the transformational results. I immediately signed up to get my massage license and become an Aston Patterning® Practitioner.

Aston is the foundation that has refined and broadened my expertise as a Pilates and movement specialist. As a choreographer, I see the body as expression moving through all planes like a gyroscope moving out in spirals from the center. Aston is unique in how it honors this quality, viewing the 3-dimensional asymmetrical expression of the individual body in relationship to itself in gravity. It teaches how to support an individual without imposing a rigid form onto their body or forcing them into a grid.

The central part of the Aston system is the assessment of the client. It is the protocol that we learn that teaches the how, when, where and how much to do in a massage or movement session. The result of this strategy is that the body finds more ease and fluidity. The recovery begins as the body learns to move in ways that heal physical limitations and discomfort. What I enjoy most is that clients learn as we go how a movement habit might be influencing their pain or discomfort and how to incorporate their new body awareness into everyday life. In this way they regain grounding and balance. Moving in comfort with more strength, they can be empowered to sustain great changes in their lives.

My Aston “eye”, transfers to how I see all physical bodies. For example, how I see my horse move from back to front and how the pattern of a vertical human riding on top influences that movement. With these skills, all those moving parts of both horse and rider have the ability to find balance, keeping both healthier, being kinder to the horse and better for the relationship between them. Never ending puzzles keep me and others moving forward with more resilience.

Michelle Wald

After suffering from a water skiing accident after PT school in 1991, I spent many years, with neck pain, neurological pain and structural instability, I happened upon Aston® Kinetics. I quickly saw Aston® Kinetics gave me the tools to solve my fascial torsion problems.

As I progressed through the certification and advanced training process, my pain was eliminated. I learned to use the self care techniques, Aston® Toning and postural training to continue to improve my strength and endurance. I trust and utilize these foundational assessment and treatment techniques to keep healthy and help my clients thrive.

Structural Assessment and Advanced problem solving for complex pain patterns coupled with Ergonomics and functional movement training has improved my clinical skills and helped my clients be free from pain and have the life they want to live. I specialize in Back pain resolution, shoulder impingement and recovery from frozen shoulder. I love teaching people Postural Re-Education from a approachable way and one of the highlights of my week is a Senior Fitness class.

I am also incorporating functional medicine training to further improve the outcomes in my practice.
